Sandra Woien is an Associate Teaching Professor in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies. She currently teaches a variety of courses dealing with ancient philosophy, human flourishing, and applied ethics. She is ACUE and Quality Matters certified and serves on Quality Matters review committees.
She received her doctorate in philosophy from Arizona State University along with a graduate certificate in Bioethics, Policy and Law that involved completing an internship at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. In addition to her internship in clinical ethics at the Mayo Clinic, she has also served on the Institutional Review Board at ASU and consulted with the Arizona Bioethics Network on developing educational materials for medical providers and patients. Before joining the ASU faculty, she was an assistant professor in Health Care Ethics at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, and she worked with a variety of health professional students including teaching graduate-level classes.
Her research interests coalesce around the concept of the good life and primarily comprise theoretical concepts of well-being and their practical application to pivotal life decisions. More recently, she has explored how ancient philosophy can also be action-guiding and has aimed to distill ancient insights into practical tools that can be used to enhance human flourishing. Her work has appeared in The Conversation, American Journal of Bioethics, BMC Medical Ethics, and elsewhere.
