Saburo Sugiyama is research professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University, professor emeritus of Aichi Prefectural University, and also a research affiliate of Okayama University, Japan. His major research focuses on the Mesoamerican social histories, particularly of Teotihuacan, ancient urbanism, iconography, and symbolism; theory and method, particularly cognitive archaeology. He has been the co-director of the Moon Pyramid Project, an Invited Professor for the Mexican National Institute projects at the Sun Pyramid in Teotihuacan; He is also a research member of the Templo Mayor Project in Mexico. He is recently coordinating an ambitious program "Cosmic Mesoamerican Cities in 3D" carrying out detailed and precise LiDAR mapping of ancient cities and monuments, connecting them to the data of sacrificial burials, art objects, etc. to explore human´s evolving cognitive capacities and their social dimensions, particularly social hierarchy and rulership.
