Giuseppe Mascaro is an Associate Professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University. He is a hydrologist whose work spans hydroclimatology, water resources, environmental hazards, and the interaction between climate and hydrologic systems.
He received a Laurea in Civil Engineering, summa cum laude, and a Ph.D. in Hydrology from the University of Cagliari, Italy. Before joining the ASU faculty, he held research positions at the University of Cagliari, New Mexico Tech, and ASU.
Mascaro leads an interdisciplinary research program supported by federal and regional agencies, including the National Science Foundation, NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Energy, NOAA, and Arizona water agencies. His work involves collaborations with researchers in hydrology, atmospheric and climate science, environmental science, engineering, and data science, as well as with water managers and public agencies.
At ASU, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in hydrology, water resources, fluid mechanics, and environmental data analysis. He mentors undergraduate, M.S., Ph.D., and postdoctoral researchers and received the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment Excellence in Teaching Award in 2018.
- Ph.D. Hydrology, University of Cagliari, Italy 2008
- M.S. (Laurea). Civil Engineering (Summa Cum Laude), University of Cagliari, Italy 2001
Mascaro’s research focuses on hydrologic extremes, hydroclimatology and hydrometeorology, precipitation and flood processes, water resources, climate-change impacts, urban hydrology, and stochastic and process-based hydrologic modeling.
His research seeks to understand how precipitation, floods, and water availability emerge from interactions among atmospheric forcing, hydrologic processes, climate variability and change, and human-modified landscapes. His group combines statistical and stochastic methods, process-based hydrologic and hydrodynamic modeling, remote sensing, weather radar observations, climate model simulations, and large hydrometeorological datasets.
Current research themes include:
- physical mechanisms and nonstationarity of extreme precipitation and floods;
- statistical and process-informed frequency analysis of hydrologic extremes;
- space-time characterization and stochastic modeling of precipitation;
- regional water availability, groundwater recharge, and managed aquifer recharge;
- hydroclimatic change in the Colorado River Basin and other water-limited regions;
- high-resolution modeling of urban flooding and water-related hazards; and
- the use of hydrologic and climate information to support water-resources planning and climate adaptation.
