Jose A. Mendez joined the ASU economics faculty in 1980. His primary area of research is in international economics, having published articles related to free trade areas (NAFTA, CACM, EU, etc.), U.S.-Mexico migration, exchange rate regimes, and the impact of multinational firms in developing countries. His most recent paper is “National Levels of Corruption and Foreign Direct Investment,” Journal of Comparative Economics 47 (2019), with J. Brada, Z. Drabek, and M. Perez.
Professor Mendez currently teaches the Capstone of Economics course and a Microeconomic Principles course for the Universal Learner Program. Recently, he won the 2021-2022 "Rethinking Business Education" Outstanding Online Teaching Award.
Professor Mendez has held a number of other positions. He served as Assistant Chair in the department of economics for eight years and he was director of the W. P. Carey MBA program in Mexico City for five. While on leave from ASU, he spent one year at the U.S. Agency for International Development and three years at the U.S. International Trade Commission. He has also consulted with the World Bank, Organization of American States, USAID, and USIA.
