Dr. Michael Little Crow, an esteemed Indigenous Math Educator, is deeply committed to promoting mathematics education and empowering learners from diverse backgrounds. As a member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa-Cree people, he co-founded OPEN Global Village, Original Peoples Education Network, Inc., which focuses on supporting education abroad initiatives. The organization has successfully facilitated two education projects in Thailand and a sabbatical program in Kazakhstan, where Dr. Little Crow taught mathematics through the exciting medium of robotics.
Dr. Little Crow's dedication to mathematics education extends beyond international endeavors. He actively collaborates with the education agencies of several tribal nations, including the Pascua Yaqui, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Gila River Indian Community, and various Chippewa nations in North Dakota and Wisconsin. Together, they provide valuable professional development opportunities in mathematics, aiming to enhance teaching methodologies and empower educators within these communities.
In his quest to amplify mathematical understanding and personal growth, Dr. Little Crow receives ongoing support and guidance from his mindfulness teacher and mentor, Dr. Pinthong. Drawing inspiration from ancient mental calculation techniques that have thrived for over 3,000 years in India, Dr. Little Crow develops workshops that empower learners of all ages. Through these workshops, participants discover the inherent power of mathematics within themselves and connect with its human development aspects. Dr. Little Crow firmly believes that by tapping into their mathematical power, individuals from around the world can unlock their full human potentiality.
In addition to his work with OPEN Global Village, Dr. Little Crow has held various academic positions throughout his career. He served as an instructor at Oregon State University from 1998 to 2004 and held the role of residential faculty at Scottsdale Community College from 2004 to 2018. Currently, he holds the position of Teaching Assistant Professor at Arizona State University while continuing to contribute as an adjunct faculty member at Scottsdale Community College. These academic appointments complement his international work and reflect his dedication to both local and global mathematics education.
Dr. Little Crow's educational journey includes earning a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Mathematics Education from Oregon State University (OSU). He further pursued his academic pursuits at Arizona State University (ASU), where he earned his EdD in Educational Leadership and Innovation. His doctoral research focused on the development of a podcast titled "Professional Development for Math Educators: Amplifying, Hearing, and Understanding the Voice of Community Educators." These academic achievements and research endeavors highlight Dr. Little Crow's commitment to advancing the field of mathematics education and uplifting the voices of community educators.
Through his multifaceted roles as an educator, researcher, and advocate, Dr. Michael Little Crow continues to make significant contributions to the field of mathematics education, promoting inclusivity, empowerment, and the realization of human potential through the study of mathematics.
