Ana Orrantia Murphy MS,RN,CNE, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Barrett Honors College faculty in ASU’s Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Arizona State University in December 1982. Upon graduation, she was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps. She spent 7 years on active duty, including a 2.5-year tour of duty at Torrejon Air Base in Madrid, Spain. She was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain and received numerous military citations for her service. After serving in the Air Force, Professor Murphy worked in a nurse owned and operated wellness company where she served as assistant vice-president for the state of Arizona. She earned a Master of Science in Community Health Nursing from ASU in 1993 and began her career as a nurse educator. She was residential faculty for Maricopa Community Colleges for 10 years before accepting a position as a Faculty Associate at ASU in 2012. In 2017, she accepted a position as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Pre-Licensure Program for Edson College. Her clinical experience is varied from adult medical-surgical, cardiac, all areas of maternal-child nursing, and community health. Teaching experience includes didactic and clinical in nursing fundamentals, adult health, obstetrics, and community health. She has also taught in various experiential (simulation) lab courses. Professor Murphy has been a prenatal educator for 33 years. During semester breaks she travels to colleges and universities throughout the United States teaching national nursing licensure exam (NCLEX) review courses. She is the Co-Faculty Advisor for the Student Nurses Association.
Professor Murphy’s international experience includes a medical mission in Honduras; Spanish studies in Guadalajara, Mexico; living, working, traveling in Spain and Europe for 2.5 years; and leading study abroad programs for ASU. She has been the Co-Faculty Director for the Edson College Study Abroad Program in Peru for the summers of 2018 and 2019 and in spring 2023 will be the Faculty Director of Edson's new service-learning program in collaboration with the Tia Foundation in Jalisco, Mexico. Since the spring 2020 semester, she has been the health team faculty mentor for the Barrett GlobalResolve program. In this program, the health team students from various disciplines have designed meaningful health promotion interventions and have implemented them in Mexico and Barbados.
