C.R. Macchi was trained as a systems therapist receiving his doctorate in family therapy from Kansas State University. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Arizona, an Approved Supervisor with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT), and a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) with the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). He is currently with Arizona State University as a Clinical Professor, Chair of Internship Programs, and Director of the CHS Suprastructure Project. He consulted with field experts and developed a program student intern performance rubric that assesses integrated behavioral health provider core competencies. He also developed and teaches a course focused on working with couples and families in primary care.
Macchi is involved in several grant-funded research initiatives focused on the development, implementation, and evaluation of in-person and online trainings, graduate program training, and the development of online data management systems. He is working with a research team that is conducting a study to validate the Practice Integration Profile (PIP), a practice-level integration measure. As the principal investigator, Macchi is leading a team that is developing an asynchronous, online training program designed for adult learners who are providers of integrated team-based healthcare in primary care settings. This initiative is funded by a five-year Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) subcontract with the University of Vermont School of Medicine and in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. He is on a team overseeing theArizona State University Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Training & Implementation Collaborative (ASU-STIC). This three-year Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant-funded projectworks with five ASU degree programs (i.e., Nursing, Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and Integrated Behavioral Health) focused ondeveloping sustainable training programs for clinical students preparing to work in medical and mental health settings.
As a co-investigator on several previous Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)-funded grants,he led a research team that developed, implemented, and evaluated a multi-delivery training program (i.e., in-person, videoconferencing, and asynchronous online learning modules) designed to support clinicians’ use of evidence-based family therapy practices. Macchi administered the projects (i.e., contracting, staffing, research, and budgeting) in collaboration with other statewide stakeholders including the Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services of Kansas, the Association of Community Mental Health Center Directors, and Kansas Health Solutions (a state Medicaid-contracted organization). As the project manager for a five-year, USDA grant-funded initiative, he collaborated with key stakeholders in three Kansas counties training teens to engage with their communities and support increased physical activity.

Area #1 – Measuring level of integration and providers’ professional development and training issues
Through collaborative partnerships with other universities and primary care practices we are developing a tool to measure clinic-level integrated medical and behavioral practice. Focused on identifying and exploring the core competencies required to effectively deliver integrated primary care and training initiatives to further support healthcare delivery that meets the Triple Aim objectives.
Area #2 – Effects of medical management and health behavior change processes occurring within family systems
Focused on patients’ experiences with making and sustaining health behavior changes within family and other relational contexts. Studies examine biopsychosocial interactions occurring at and among various levels of a patient’s experiences.
Practice Integration Profile (PIP) Research Team
Development of a 30-item, valid, reliable measure of practice-level integration with University of Vermont, School of Medicine and University of Massachusetts, Medical School
