Dr. Kristina ByBee teaches first-year composition courses in CISA. She studies the ways literacy connects students' shared humanity through global communities.
In Teaching, Learning, Literacy in Our High-Risk High-Tech World, James Paul Gee writes, “Teaching today, at its best, involves using multiple good technologies and good forms of social interaction and participation to design good learning experiences so that learners can know, do, and become.” Gee’s words resonate with me because he succinctly names three key elements that guide my own teaching. I believe multiple literacies, student engagement, and active learning build good classroom communities where learning happens, no matter the discipline or grade level. In the years I have spent teaching at the secondary and college level, these key beliefs have served as the foundation for teaching and learning.
My current research includes examining ways that global competence skills can connect young people across the world through writing and ways that virtual communities promote empathy and understanding.
