Kassaw Merie, PhD, MSW is an Assistant Teaching Professor and the Program Assessment and Evaluation Coordinator at the Arizona State University (ASU) School of Social Work. He also served as Campus Coordinator for the ASU School of Social Work at the West Valley Campus from December 2022 to May 2025, where he supported academic operations, student engagement, and program development initiatives.
Prior to joining ASU as a full-time faculty member, Dr. Merie was a Lecturer and Director of Field Education in the Graduate Social Work Department at Kean University in New Jersey. In this role, he oversaw field placement programs, cultivated community partnerships, and ensured high-quality experiential learning opportunities for graduate students. Earlier in his career, he served as Program Manager for the Refugee Foster Care Program in Phoenix, Arizona, where he led efforts to support refugee youth and families through coordinated, culturally responsive services.
Dr. Merie brings extensive professional experience working with vulnerable populations, particularly refugee and immigrant communities. His work spans collaboration with federal, state, and local agencies to deliver comprehensive services through community outreach, grant writing, program development and management, case management, counseling, supervision, and training. His practice is grounded in culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches that address the complex needs of underserved populations.
His teaching is deeply informed by his lived experiences and multidisciplinary academic background. A committed lifelong learner, Dr. Merie integrates diverse perspectives into his pedagogy, fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment. He is dedicated to preparing students to become effective agents of positive social change at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Through a student-centered and collaborative teaching approach, he empowers learners to take initiative, think critically, and engage meaningfully with communities both locally and globally.
Dr. Merie’s research interests focus on diaspora communities, self-sufficiency, community development, and social entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on sustainable and community-driven solutions.
