Kevin Langergraber has studied the behavioral and molecular ecology of the Ngogo group of chimpanzees in Kibale National Park, Uganda, since 2001. He has served as co-director of the Ngogo Chimpanzee Project, a long-term field project devoted to the research and conservation of Ngogo chimpanzees, since 2011. He held positions at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and at Boston University before joining ASU in 2014.
- Ph.D. Anthropology, University of Michigan
- B.A. Psychology, Okanagan University College
As our closest living relatives, chimpanzees are of interest to evolutionary anthropologists for providing the standard by which to judge human uniqueness. Most of my research focuses on the exceptionally large Ngogo community, which contains about 200 individually recognized and named chimpanzees. My research combines long-term behavioral observations and demographic data with genetic data derived from non-invasively collected fecal samples to answer questions about the evolution of chimpanzees and humans. However, I am interested in all facets of the evolution of chimpanzee behavior, and I encourage potential students to contact me to discuss their ideas for research at Ngogo.
