Dr. Sara Beaudrie is a nationally recognized leader in heritage language education, innovative program design, and student-centered pedagogy. She holds a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, with a minor in Spanish Linguistics, and an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language, both from the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on heritage language pedagogy, bilingualism, classroom instruction, language program development, and critical approaches to heritage language education.
Over the past two decades, Dr. Beaudrie has led transformative efforts to develop inclusive, equity-driven academic programs that align closely with ASU’s Charter and design aspirations. She has built and directed one of the country’s leading Spanish for heritage learners programs and is the lead faculty for the PhD track in Heritage Language Pedagogy and Research in ASU’s new doctoral program in Spanish Linguistics.
As a scholar, she has co-authored and edited several foundational works in the field, including Spanish as a Heritage Language in the United States: The State of the Field (Georgetown University Press), Heritage Language Pedagogy: Research and Practice (McGraw Hill), Heritage Language Teaching: Critical Language Awareness Perspectives for Research and Pedagogy (Routledge), Heritage Language Program Administration (Routledge). Her work has appeared in top peer-reviewed journals, and she is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences. Her research is purposefully public-facing, designed to inform policy, pedagogy, and advocacy for minoritized language communities.
Dr. Beaudrie is recognized for her rigorous, inclusive mentorship and has received several awards. She teaches courses in heritage language pedagogy, program administration, and bilingualism, often mentoring students through dissertation projects and professional development. Many of her graduate mentees have gone on to secure competitive tenure-track positions at research-intensive universities.
Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Beaudrie has lived in Arizona for over 20 years. Prior to joining ASU, she served as an associate professor at the University of Arizona and directed its Spanish for Heritage Learners program.
Through an inclusive and visionary approach to teaching, research, and leadership, Dr. Beaudrie seeks to advance SILC’s mission as a dynamic center for global learning, innovation, and inclusive excellence. As Director of SILC, she leads strategic initiatives that enhance student academic and career outcomes, foster meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration, and expand the school’s impact within both local communities and the broader global community that ASU serves.

Dr. Sara Beaudrie’s research lies at the intersection of applied linguistics, heritage and second language pedagogy, and education. With a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching and a specialization in language pedagogy and program administration, her work has shaped the field’s understanding of heritage language learners by addressing their diverse linguistic, cultural, and affective needs. Her scholarship advocates for inclusive, research-based practices, such as differentiated instruction, project-based learning, and critical language awareness, that transform classrooms and programs alike. Her co-authored book, Heritage Language Program Direction: Research into Practice (McGraw-Hill, 2023), bridges research and real-world application, while her two co-edited volumes, Innovative Strategies for Heritage Language Teaching (Georgetown) and Heritage Language Teaching: Critical Language Awareness Perspectives(Routledge), further advance pedagogical innovation. With over 40 publications and more than 80 invited and peer-reviewed presentations, Dr. Beaudrie’s scholarship is widely recognized nationally and internationally. Her work remains deeply committed to creating transformative learning environments that center student success, equity, and empowerment.
