Nate Newman served as the Lawrence Professor of Solid State Sciences and is an emeritus faculty member in the materials program at Arizona State University's School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy. Newman earned master's and doctoral degrees from Stanford University in 1983 and 1987, respectively. He received the bachelor's degree in biomedical/electrical engineering from the University of Southern California in 1981. He has been employed as a member of the technical staff at the University of California at Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Stanford University and Conductus, Inc. and as an associate professor at Northwestern University. His research interests include the growth, characterization and modeling of novel solid-state materials for microwave, photonic, and high-speed applications. He has been author or co-author of more than 200 technical papers, has 14 patents, has received the IEEE Van Duzer award and is a fellow of the IEEE, the American Physical Society, and the American Ceramic Society and a member of the European Union Academy of Sciences. He also served as associate editor for Materials in the IEEE Transactions of Applied Superconductivity, the chair of the U.S. Committee on Superconductor Electronics. and director of ASU’s LeRoy Eyring Center for Solid State Sciences.
