Glenn M. Wong is a Distinguished Professor of Practice - Sports Law in the Allan “Bud” Selig Sports Law and Business (SLB) Program. He joined ASU in 2015 as a Distinguished Professor of Practice and teaches, advises students and has taught courses that cover topics such as sports career strategies, sports law, current legal issues, negotiations, alternative dispute resolution, college athletics, Major League Baseball salary arbitration.
From January 2017 to June 2023 Wong was SLB’s Executive Director. He has overseen the Master of Sports Law and Business Program’s (MSLB) strong and continued growth and the formation of an Advisory Board composed of 48 sports industry leaders. A new degree program was added: a concurrent MSLB-J.D. degree. The SLB program revamped its curriculum and added several courses including courses such as “Negotiations and Alternative Dispute Resolutions in Sports” (team taught by Jarvis, Wong, Ray Anderson, and Lon Babby) and “Sports - Big Events”.
Wong has authored several books including The Law and Business of the Sports Industries, Volumes 1 and 2, the first sports law case book. He has published many articles, including several law review articles.
Wong is a past-president of the Sports Lawyers Association (SLA) and SLA board member since 1998. He formerly served as outside counsel to the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox in salary arbitration matters. He also served as an arbitrator for the National Football League and the National Football League Players Association, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and the American Arbitration Association. Wong has also worked or consulted for several sports entities, including the PGA of America, Sports Illustrated, Reebok, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Women Leaders in College Sports, the NCAA, the U.S. Olympic Committee, U.S. Triathlon, U.S. Biathlon, and Major League Baseball. Wong is also a member of the Fiesta Bowl’s Board of Directors. He formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the United States Tennis Association New England and the Phoenix Local Organizing Committee (2017 NCAA Final Four).
Wong has been a frequent speaker, panelist, and moderator at professional organization meetings, sports law and business conferences, and law schools. He has spoken or moderated at, among others, the Sports Lawyers Association Conference, the Sports Management Institute, the Stanford Graduate School of Business’ Sports Innovation Conference, Stanford Law School’s Law and Policy Review Symposium, Harvard Law School’s Sports Law Symposium, and the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
Wong served with distinction for 36 years on the faculty of the Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts. He was honored with numerous awards at UMass for his exemplary service, including two Chancellor’s Medals and one John Francis Kennedy Maroon Leadership Award. Wong served as interim Director of Athletics and then acting Dean of the School of Physical Education at UMass (1992-93). He was the UMass Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA from 1993-2013. Wong retired in 2015 as Professor Emeritus in UMass’s Isenberg School of Management.
Wong was a visiting scholar at Stanford University Law School in the spring of 2014, where he also taught sports law in 2015. He has received Brandeis University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Wong is a member of the Massachusetts Bar.
