Xavier serves professionally as an Assistant Teaching Professor for the Design School (TDS) at Arizona State University (ASU), a current Media Arts & Sciences PhD candidate in The School of Arts, Media, and Engineering (AME), as well as serving as an Adjunct Faculty at Mesa Community College (MCC). Xavier is an IIITSE (immersive, interdisciplinary, identity based science experiences) scholar within ESSA (Earth Systems Science for the Anthropocene), researcher in the Geometric Media Lab (GML), and member of the Indigenous Design Collaborative (IDC) within TDS.
As a PhD candidate, Xavier's dissertation research primarily engages with the concepts of knowledge procurement, (gate)keeping, and experience, particularly with regard to “non-traditional” knowledge sources. The aim of this work is to bolster and examine the valuation of such knowledge sources and spaces in comparison with Western frameworks and systems. Xavier's work has been shown and published at conferences such as CyberPsychology, CyberTherapy & Social Networking Conference (CyPsy), the International Conference on Movement and Computing Conference (MoCo/SloMoCo) and Society for Literature, Science & the Arts (SLSA).
As an IIITSE Scholar, Xavier has worked with other students and faculty in immersive research trips to California (w/ Coast Miwok, Pomo, and inter-tribal communities) led by Dr. Melissa Nelson, as well as between N. New Mexico and N. Arizona (w/ Dine (Navajo), Acoma, and Zuni) led by Dr. Michelle Hale. Additionally, they have served under Dr. Pavan Turaga as a researcher on various projects through GML, most recently aiding in the development of a web platform for people with neurological disorders and their caregivers.
