Lisa Whitaker is a senior lecturer with Arizona State University's T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics. She has been teaching online and brick-and-mortar sociology courses at ASU since 2001. Her primary areas of interest within sociology are social change, social interaction, sociology of crime and sociology of law.
Whitaker is convinced that her job involves more than simply shoving course material down students' throats. Rather, she believes her role includes preparing students to be successful both personal and professionally in the "Real World" - which these days can be a very tough, competitive place - after graduation. She hopes she facilitates maturity, responsibility and decency in her students.
Whitaker believes there is more to life than just work and that it's important to have a balance. For enjoyment, she works out at the gym, runs, swims, and watches foreign films. She also volunteers with the Flying Samaritans, an organization that provides medical and dental services to the residents of a small village in Baja Sur, Mexico.
