Edward Maguire is a Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University, where he also serves as Director of the Public Safety Innovation Lab. In addition, he holds a visiting professorship at the University of South Wales in the United Kingdom. He earned his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York at Albany in 1997.
Professor Maguire’s research centers on policing and violence, with a broader interest in applying criminological theory and methods to crime and justice issues in the developing world. His recent work has explored topics such as communication between police and the public, police responses to crowd events, gangs and gang violence, officer safety and wellness, and the evaluation of violent crime control initiatives.
He has conducted research or delivered lectures in 25 countries across five continents and is the author or editor of seven books and more than 130 journal articles and book chapters on policing and violence.
Beyond academia, Professor Maguire is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu who enjoys teaching self-defense to children and adults.
