Fangwu Wei is an Associate Research Scientist, Senior Data Scientist at Decision Theater (DT) at Arizona State University (ASU). He conducts research work by employing machine learning, statistical analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analysis, data visualization, and prototype development to develop a deeper understanding of systems, policy, planning and procedure. He has worked on various DT projects with other research scientists, software developers, and graphic designers to develop analytical models, build data analytics pipelines, and develop web-based platforms to enhance the decision making process. Prior to DT, Fangwu was a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning at ASU and he developed a web-based interactive platform for location analysis and planning by using a geodesign methodology. This geodesign platform is used to engage multiple stakeholders in a workshop to locate, simulate, and evaluate the performance of the network of compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel stations for trucking in the Southwest United States.
Fangwu is a trained information scientist and geographer and he has a diverse educational background. His research interests are multidisciplinary, addressing substantive, practical and technical issues within the domains of data science, GIScience, transportation, public policy evaluation, and regional development. He has published peer-reviewed articles in different journals including Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice, Professional Geographer, and Journal of Transport Geography. He has been invited to review manuscripts for several high-impact journals, such as Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, Telematics and Informatics, Transport Policy, International Journal of Geographical Information Science, and Annals of the American Association of Geographers.
