I am an English instructor, Arizona State University alumna, United States Navy veteran, entrepreneur, and lifelong learner passionate about the transformative power of education. My teaching philosophy emphasizes curiosity, critical thinking, reflection, and the belief that meaningful growth occurs through intentional practice and a willingness to challenge our perspectives.
Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, my professional journey has been anything but traditional. After serving in the Navy as a Search-and-Rescue Swimmer, I worked in medical administration before spending a transformative year teaching conversational English in Japan, an experience that inspired my career in education. I subsequently earned my Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in History from the University of Phoenix and my Master of Arts in English from Arizona State University, graduating summa cum laude.
Since 2019, I have taught English at Arizona State University, Florida State College at Jacksonville, and St. Johns River State College. In 2022, I received FSCJ's Teacher of the Year award, having been nominated each year of my tenure. I now focus my academic career at ASU, where I am proud to contribute to the university's commitment to educational accessibility, innovation, and student success.
My teaching philosophy prioritizes process over product, encouraging students to approach writing as a recursive practice of discovery, analysis, and reflection. I emphasize rhetorical awareness, metacognition, and the development of transferable communication skills that extend beyond the classroom. As a veteran and nontraditional learner, I recognize the diverse experiences students bring to higher education and strive to cultivate an environment that balances academic rigor with intellectual curiosity, encouragement, and meaningful personal growth.
Outside academia, I co-own The Art of Muscle Performance, a natural bodybuilding and performance coaching business serving more than 30 athletes. As a competitive natural bodybuilder, I see strong parallels between coaching and teaching, particularly the importance of discipline, resilience, self-awareness, and sustained effort. My interests also include psychology, philosophy, holistic wellness, literature, and the relationship between mind and body. I am an avid reader of classical literature, historical fiction, and fantasy, and I enjoy exploring Biblical scholarship, Stoic philosophy, and the complexities of human behavior.
Ultimately, I believe writing is more than an academic skill; it is a powerful means of examining our experiences, challenging assumptions, and making meaning of the world. As an Arizona native, ASU graduate, and educator, I am committed to helping students recognize the value of their voices, develop confidence in their abilities, and embrace learning as a lifelong process of discovery and transformation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I delivered this institution-wide presentation to more than 1,000 instructors at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ), where I was subsequently honored as the 2022 Teacher of the Year. As campus closures forced an unprecedented transition to remote learning, many faculty members faced the challenge of teaching online for the first time. Drawing on my experiences as both a student and instructor at Arizona State University, I shared practical, learner-centered instructional strategies to help faculty adapt their courses while maintaining academic rigor, student engagement, and meaningful instructor presence. These approaches extend beyond online education, benefiting traditional, hybrid, and honors classrooms by expanding access to course materials, integrating multimodal content that accommodates diverse learning preferences, and strengthening the student learning experience. Most importantly, these methods streamline instructional delivery, allowing educators to devote more time to what I believe is the most impactful element of teaching: personalized, substantive, and actionable feedback that fosters student growth.
