As a first-generation college student, it took many semesters as an undecided major to complete composition as a final general education requirement. That led to the English department and student employment at the campus writing center. After working as a student tutor, Malm served as the Online Writing Lab Coordinator before overseeing the center and expanding tutoring services to general eduation courses.
