Das holds the Alberto Enrique Behar Assistant Research Professorship at the School of Earth and Space Exploration, and is a core faculty member at the Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science. As an expert in environmental robotics, Das focuses on developing innovative solutions for optimal data collection and analysis across diverse ecosystems, including geologic sites, agricultural farms, forests, and coral reefs. The work enables insights at spatial and temporal scales not previously possible.
As the director of the Distributed Robotic Exploration and Mapping Systems (DREAMS) Laboratory, Das leads research that advances cutting-edge methodologies in sampling, modeling, and predictive analysis. The DREAMS Lab integrates both in-situ and ex-situ analysis, while also leveraging remotely sensed data to optimize algorithms for the collection of physical rock, water, leaf, soil, and air samples. This multi-faceted approach enhances the precision of environmental predictions.
Currently, Das is involved in several sponsored research projects, including the development of digital twins for Lunar mission planning, geomorphological studies of tectonic fault scarps, and innovative technologies for coral reef monitoring. In addition to these efforts, Das has co-organized the National Science Foundation’s Student Cyber-Physical Systems Challenge between 2016 and 2021. Das is also the founder of two initiatives: OpenUAV, an open-source, cloud-enabled testbed for UAV education and research, and DeepGIS, an AI-enabled platform for advanced geospatial data analysis.
Ph.D., Computer Science, University of Southern California, 2014
M.S., Computer Science, University of Southern California, 2008
B.E., Telecommunication Engineering, PESIT (Bangalore, India), 2004
Das' research interests lie broadly in data-driven robotic sampling, with focus on principled approaches from statistical machine learning for robotic collection of physical samples (e.g, diseased leaf samples, water, soil) for ex-situ analysis.
His research contributions include mixed-initiative spatio-temporal observation of environmental and biological processes, exploiting mathematical models, and algorithms for closing the loop on data-driven robotic sampling.
Das leads Distributed Robotic Exploration and Mapping Systems (DREAMS) laboratory, that develop systems that support and extend Earth and space exploration research. These systems help maintain the pulse on our planet and beyond, through improved observation of topography, land-cover dynamics, volcanoes, underwater habitats, and agricultural farms, while providing insights for generalization of the methods across these diverse application areas.
