Koehler completed his doctorate in the School of Politics and Global Studies at Arizona State University in 2014, previously completing his master's global politics at California State University, Los Angeles, and receiving his bachelor's in psychology from ASU.
Koehler's primary research interests include the role of identity in international politics, specifically for the region of East Asia, though he also have interests in international relations theory in general, traditional security issues, cyber security, nuclear proliferation, and terrorism.

East Asia serves as my primary regional interest, though I am also interested in other parts of Asia as well as the Middle East and North Africa. I have engaged in some Chinese language study to facilitate my research interests and hope to continually improve my knowledge of the language and others.
