Bina Mehta holds a Ph.D. in English Literature from Arizona State University (ASU). She specializes in British, Indian, and Irish literature from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century, focusing on postcolonial literary studies. Her research examines freedom narratives conceived during the era of high imperialism by writers from both sides of the colonial divide—Britain, Ireland, and India. She studies these narratives to assess both their local (parochial) and global (cosmopolitan) aspirations. Mehta is also interested in material culture studies, posthumanism and poststructuralism. She has presented her work at numerous national and international conferences, including in Britain and India.
Besides academic writing, Mehta writes creative fiction and nonfiction in Gujarati and English. She is also a singer and has published three music albums that feature Gujarati, Hindi, and Urdu lyric poetry, collaborating with her husband.

Mehta is interested in the concept of agency or identity in postcolonial fiction, specifically through the poststructural lens. She examines how this concept relates to the formation of parochial and cosmopolitan ideals of freedom in both national and transnational narratives. She also explores how culturally significant material objects can galvanize ideals of freedom through their close relation to individual and collective agency.
