Sujin Kim is an experimental filmmaker and Assistant Professor of Animation at Arizona State University. Kim employs a poetic approach to moving image making within the realm of documentary animated filmmaking. She earned her Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts, and her MFA thesis, which amplifies survivor testimonies of military sexual slavery during World War II, was awarded the 49th Student Academy Award (first prize) in the animation category. Her award-winning films are housed in esteemed archives such as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Archive in the United States and the War and Women Human Rights Museum in South Korea.
Kim's films have been screened at over 60 international film festivals, including the Oscar-qualifying Ann Arbor Film Festival, RiverRun International Film Festival and the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Notable accolades include being selected for the Best Animation Director at the Shenzhen International Film Festival, and receiving the Best of the Fest at the 64th Rochester International Film Festival and the Best Experimental at the City of Angeles Women’s Film Festival. Kim’s technical experiments in animation and academic paper have been presented at the conferences such as the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) and ACM SIGGRAPH Asia.
