Nitin is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the area of AI & Society at ASU's School for the Future of Innovation in Society (SFIS) in collaboration with the New York Academy of Sciences. His overarching research interest is in studying the relationship between the human drive for creating technologies and how human technologies and societies co-shape each other. At the core, he is interested in studying the mechanisms of interpersonal trust that make large communities cohere and how technologies (esp. ICTs) such as deep learning infused AI influence the mechanisms of trust.
Nitin's doctoral dissertation research at the School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin investigated the notion of public trust in video in light of the emergence of deepfake technology. This research highlighted severe challenges posed by deepfake technology to public trust in the media, and to the personal credibility and safety of visual journalists.
Nitin's long term research interests include: studying the history of science and technology, and exploring that history with an aim to comprehend the socio-technical landscape; the role of the photographic record in shaping history; and in the deep connection between human curiosity and the continuing evolution of the scientific method.
