James Abbas is an associate professor and director of the Center for Adaptive Neural Systems in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU). His research interests are in applications of neural engineering techniques and technology in the area of medical rehabilitation. Current projects include the development and assessment of systems that use electrical stimulation for therapy after spinal cord injury, systems to restore sensory capabilities to individuals with limb loss, and techniques to improve sensorimotor function in individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. He received his bachelor's degree in bioelectrical engineering from Brown University in Providence, RI and his master's degree and doctorate in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. At ASU, Dr. Abbas also holds appointments in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience, the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering, and Barret, The Honors College. He was recently elected as Senior Member in National Academy of Inventors.
