Dr. Joshua Parmenter is an assistant professor and the director of the HEAL Lab. Their program of research uses an intersectional framework to quantitatively and qualitatively examine how experiences of inequity and protective factors influence mental health outcomes among those with multiple marginalized intersecting identities, such as Queer and Trans Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Utilizing strengths-based approaches, Dr. Parmenter also seeks to center resilience, resistance, and joy among queer and trans communities. Their research not only seeks to inform psychotherapy, but also ways psychologists can transform oppressive social structures and policies that perpetuate health disparities among queer and trans people of color.

My program of research combines an intersectional framework to understand how intersecting systems of oppression (e.g., racism, colonization, heterosexism, cissexism, monosexism) create unique experiences of inequity that shape mental health outcomes for queer, trans, and nonbinary (QTNB) communities-- specifically QTNB Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Further, my research seeks to center the experiences of strength, resilience, joy, and healing among QTNB communities as many narratives of QTNB experience are deficit-focused. Through this line of work, we aim to: 1) identify specific intersectional experiences of inequity and resilience among QTNB-BIPOC; 2) create measures that capture unique QTNB experiences; 3) examine the pathways between experiences of inequity, resilience, and mental health outcomes for QTNB people; and 4) develop frameworks and interventions that aid in promoting healing among QTNB communities and transforming oppressive systems.
