Dr. Paul Yount (he/him) is currently employed at the Phoenix Police Department Crime Laboratory as a Forensic Scientist III in the DNA Section. In 2024, he obtained a Doctor of Forensic Science (DFS) from Oklahoma State University, in which he completed doctoral capstone research on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI-B) in forensic science professional and academic realms. In 2021, he obtained a Master's in Forensic Science (MSFS) from the University of New Haven. Dr. Yount's graduate research investigated odontological methods, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and DNA analysis from skeletal samples to aid in unidentified human remains (UHR) identification. In 2019, he obtained a B.S. in Forensic Science and a B.A. in Biology from the University of Providence. As the sole author, Dr. Yount published his undergraduate research titled "Evaluating the Accuracy of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis Using Hemodynamic Factors" within the Intermountain Journal of Sciences (https://arc.lib.montana.edu/ojs/index.php/IJS/article/view/1551). Through his educational and professional career, he has had the privilege of teaching biology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and forensic science courses to undergraduate students.
Dr. Yount's teaching philosophy revolves around the integration of theory and practical application, emphasizing hands-on experience and critical thinking skills. He believes in providing students with a comprehensive understanding of scientific principles that underpin forensic techniques, while also imparting the practical skills necessary for success in the current field. Furthermore, his research background in unidentified human remains, DNA preservation/recovery, microscopy, forensic odontology, and bloodstain pattern analysis complements his teaching expertise, allowing him to bring cutting-edge advancements and real-world applications into the classroom. Dr. Yount is dedicated to staying abreast of the latest developments in forensic science and integrating this knowledge into his teaching to provide students with a forward-thinking and relevant education that evolves with technological advancements. Dr. Yount is committed to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the classroom, ensuring that all students feel valued and empowered to contribute to discussions and activities. He also firmly believes that a collaborative and inclusive learning environment enhances educational experiences and ultimately prepares students for the diverse challenges they may encounter in their careers.
