Kimberly Updegraff was a Distinguished Cowden Professor in the T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics until 2023, and she has transitioned to Professor Emeritus at ASU. Her research interests focus on the role of family relationships (i.e., mothers, fathers, siblings) in youth development from late childhood through adolescence. Central to her work is the role of gender and cultural socialization processes in shaping the lives of children, youth, and families, particularly in Latinx families. Her current work includes a randomized clinical trial funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to test the effectiveness of a family-based prevention program delivered in afterschool settings to Latinx children.

Kimberly Updegraff's research interests focus on the role of family and peer relationships (i.e., mothers, fathers, siblings, and close friends) in youth development from early adolescence to young adulthood. Central to her work is understanding the role of gender in adolescents' lives, including the different experiences of girls and boys growing up in families and the roles that mothers versus fathers assume. A second important theme over the last 20 years has been the role of culture, particularly Mexican culture, in the lives of adolescents and their families.
