Jason Kelley's teaching and research focuses on transportation planning, sustainable urban planning and design, the historical evolution of urban planning and urban form, and environmental justice in the urban realm, with particular interest in pedestrian-oriented urban development and urban planning in South American cities.
Kelley's past work concentrated on road pricing strategies and the impact of such strategies on low-income and transportation-disadvantaged groups. Focusing in particular on the San Francisco Bay area, Kelley has looked at cordon pricing - a demand management strategy which aims to relieve congestion by requiring users to pay a fee to enter restricted areas.
Other transportation research Kelley has been involved in used network optimization modeling and linear programming to determine a cost-effective shipment system for indigenous goods in the Amazon region of Ecuador.
Kelley was recognized for excellence in teaching in 2011, 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2023, while he was recently awarded the 2023-2024 Outstanding Teaching Professor Award in Social Sciences by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He regularly teaches: Transportation Planning and the Environment, Theory of Urban Design, History of Planning, Environmental Justice and Cities, Planning Methods, Introduction to Urban Planning, City Structure and Planning, Walkable Cities, and Sustainable Cities.
