M. Beatriz Arias, Ph.D.
Dr. M. Beatriz Arias is an Associate Professor in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction in the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education at Arizona State University. Dr. Arias has been a Court-appointed expert in many school desegregation cases across the nation, including Los Angeles, CA, Denver CO and Chicago IL. She was a federally appointed Court Monitor in San Jose CA from 1987 through the termination of the desegregation decree in 2003. She also served as a member of a court appointed panels in Los Angeles and in Denver.
Professor Arias is currently conducting research on teachers perception of their preparation to work with English Language Learners. She was recently invited (May 2008) to present this research conducted with her students Nancy Murri, Alexandria Estrella and Amy Marcos to the Language Minority Research Institute. (insert PowerPoint) Professor Arias teaches courses preparing teachers to work with English Language Learners, and conducts research on access to English in hyper-segregated schools. In 2007 she was awarded a 1.4 million dollar grant from the Department of Education to prepare secondary teachers to work with ELL students. (insert ACCESS description)
Dr. Arias provides professional development for educators which focuses on English Language Learners, their communities and cultural contexts. She has two books in publication, the first is: A Fractured Language Policy: Structured Immersion Implementation In Arizona , co-edited with Professor Chris Faltis. The second book is: Coming to Voice: Preparing Teachers for ELLS forthcoming from Roman Littlefield press in 2008.
Dr. Arias is currently writing on the implementation of Structured English Immersion (SEI) in Arizona and secondary teacher preparation for ELL students.
Educational Implications of Linguistic Isolation and Segregation PowerPoint
Dr. Arias scholarly interests focus on educational policy and programs for English Language Learners (ELLs). Specifically, Dr. Arias is exploring the educational consequences of the linguistic and socio-economic isolation experienced by English Language Learners. She explores this concept in a recent issue of the Journal of Educational Controversy , (Linguistic Segregation and Access to English for Latino Students. Journal of Educational Controversy Vol. 2 University of Washington, 2007).
Dr. Arias also is interested in analyzing the remedies designed as part of school desegregation cases in the Southwest. This is presented in a recent issue of Teachers College Record: (The Impact of Brown on Latinos: A Study of Policy Transformation Teachers College Record Vol. 107 No. 9 2005)
