Charles Perrings is co-director of School of Life Sciences Ecoservices Group—a group researching the interactions between society and the biophysical environment.
He has three main research interests. First, he studies the anthropogenic causes of biodiversity change, and the consequences it has for health, food supply and other ecosystem services. Second, he researches the effects of globalization on the dispersal of pests and diseases. Third, he investigates the role of science in international environmental policy.
Professor Perrings has served with DIVERSITAS, and the U.S. Presidents Council of Advisors on Science and Technology working group on biodiversity and ecosystem services; and he represented theInternational Council of Science in international efforts to establish the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. He has published 13 books and around 200 scientific papers.
- Henry Chapman Fellow, University of London 1982
- Ph.D. Economic History, University of London 1976
- B.A. University of London 1973
His research interests span the dynamics of ecological-economic systems, the management of environmental public goods under uncertainty, and the environmental implications of economic development. He focuses on the implications of biodiversity change, and especially on the consequences of changes in the abundance of pests and pathogens. Major research projects include Risks of Animal and Plant Infectious Diseases Through Trade (RAPID Trade) funded by the joint NSF-NIH-USDA Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases program, and by UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (2014-2018), and Modeling Anthropogenic Effects in the Spread of Infectious Diseases (MASpread), funded by the National Institutes of Health— National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) (2011-2016).
The ECOSERVICES Group at ASU studies the causes and consequences of change in ecosystem services – the benefits that people derive from the biophysical environment. We analyse biodiversity change in terms of its impacts on the things that people care about. Following the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) these are characterised as provisioning services (foods, fuels, fibers, genetic materials, chemical compounds and the like), cultural services (aesthetic, spiritual, moral, recreational, educational, scientific uses) and regulating services (the role of ecosystems in regulating flows of provisioning and cultural services including, for example, water quality regulation, soil erosion reduction, storm damage protection and so on).
The group offers research training in biodiversity and ecosystem services both within ASU and more generally. Within ASU it supports the 4E program, Ecology, Economics, and Ethics of the Environment, a track within the Biology and Society Concentration of the MS and PhD degrees in Biology.
The Group lies within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Our research activities are supported by the Global Institute of Sustainability, and our teaching activities contribute to programs in the School of Life Sciences, the School of Sustainability, the Carey School of Business, Department of Economics, and the School of Human Evolution and Social Change.
Faculty in the ecoSERVICES GROUP are members of the Human Dimensions Faculty of the School of Life Sciences and the School of Sustainability.
