Kenneth W. Abbott is the Jack E. Brown Chair in Law Emeritus in the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law and a professor emeritus in the School of Politics and Global Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He is also the faculty counselor of the Center for Law and Global Affairs and faculty fellow with the Center for Law, Science and Innovation at Arizona State University.
Professor Abbott’s research focuses on the interdisciplinary study of international law and international relations, including a wide range of public and private international institutions in fields including environmental issues, development policy, global health, anti-corruption, emerging technologies and international trade.
Before joining ASU in 2006, Professor Abbott taught for more than 25 years at Northwestern University School of Law, where he held the Elizabeth Froehling Horner Chair in Law and Commerce. He also served as director of the Northwestern University Center for International and Comparative Studies. Professor Abbott participates actively in conferences and research projects in both international law and international relations and has spoken and taught in many countries. He has served as chair of the International Economic Law Interest Group of the American Society of International Law. Professor Abbott also practiced law at Harris Beach LLP in Rochester, N.Y., served in the VISTA Lawyer’s Program, and was a research fellow at Harvard Law School.
Professor Abbott is a lead faculty member of the Earth System Governance Project, and a member of the editorial boards of International Theory, Regulation and Governance, and the Journal of International Economic Law. In 2017, he received the inaugural Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Studies Association International Law Section.
