Long Bio
Brian (he/him) is a 4th year PhD student in the School of Sustainability. His research revolves around relational approaches to sustainability education and research through Indigenous and non-Western philosophical traditions, as well as Western relational philosophies. These philosophical perspectives challenge dualistic thinking, which many consider at the root of sustainability problems, by collapsing the illusory separation of humans (social) and nature (ecological) and related dichotomies. Brian is interested in creating space for meaningful engagement with diverse knowledges (epistemologies) and dimensions of being (ontologies) for sustainability beyond traditional stewardship models. His pedagogical approach includes a variety of tools and practices to promote awareness and genuine connection within ourselves, people, non-human beings, and nature more broadly. This includes contemplative practices, creative tools, experiential and embodied learning, storytelling, and arts-based activities. Aside from his academic work, Brian is a dad to two wonderful little humans, River (6) and Lemon (2). He is an avid mountain biker and gardener who enjoys music, movement, and mindfulness.
