Guiding research questions:
- How can we best support reentry of youth involved in the juvenile justice system back into the community?
- Does implementation of specific reentry practices increase engagement and decrease recidivism for youth with disabilities released from a juvenile correctional facility?
- How can we increase employability of youth involved in the juvenile justice system?
Research interests:
Special Education, Emotional and Behavioral Issues of Children and Youth, Teacher Education, Professional Development, Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions, Juvenile Delinquency, Global Education
In my current projects, I am researching how we can promote reentry success of youth with disabilities who are served in a secure care facility. In my research, I have found the following re-entry practices are helpful in increasing youth engagement: 1) intensive educational programming that follows Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and Individualized Transition Plan (ITP) goals; 2) vocational preparation, 3) development of a Transition Portfolio for all youth with disabilities, and 4) community supports after release.
I am also researching how we can increase employability of youth who are released from a secure care facility. The goal of my research is to create an educational environment within the state-run correctional facility that is more technologically driven and allows youth to acquire specialized training to increasing their post-release employability in technology-based jobs. In addition to technology-based educational programs in the classrooms, technology-related job training, certificate programs in various occupational fields also enhance youth employability.
