Mari Koerner is the Alice Wiley Snell Professor of Education and is the Founding Director of the Center for the Art and Science of Teaching (CAST). Her prior service at ASU includes serving as dean of the College of Teacher Education and Leadership at Arizona State University's West campus (2006-2010) and dean of Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College (2010-2016). After the merger of the three colleges of education, Professor Koerner stepped down in August 2016.
Professor Koerner has published in professional education journals and presented at major education conferences in the area of teacher preparation. She has served as principal investigator or co-director of many grant-funded programs. She received a Teacher Quality Partnership grant for $11.5M in 2014 to include methodologies in math and science for English language learners in teacher education programs, and a Kellogg Foundation Award to integrate community knowledge into the yearlong student teaching residency both of which have produced numerous manuscripts and conference presentations. Professor Koerner was also awarded a Teacher Quality Partnership grant ($34M) to build the student teaching residency and iTeachAZ program. Her newest initiative, CAST, is focused on innovative research and implementation of funded projects and service for improving teaching in formal and informal settings.
Professor Koerner is writing a case study entitled, "All the King's Men: A Case Study of Rebuilding a College of Education" which describes the changes: institutional, personnel, programs and curriculum in the reorganization of the colleges of education at ASU from 2009-2010. She has co-authored "Developing Teacher Competencies for Problem-Based Learning Pedagogy" and "Supporting Learning in Language-Minority Students" with P. Rillero, M. Jimenez, and J. Merritt. Currently she is working in a collaborative research project with Professor David Berliner about the over characterization of teachers as "bad."
Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction, University of Illinois-Chicago.
