Christos Katsanos is an exercise physiologist who studies metabolic responses in human obesity. His laboratory utilizes infusion of molecules labeled with stable isotopes in combination with tissue biopsies to investigate metabolic responses, in vivo. These methodologies are complemented by mass spectrometry analytical techniques as well as molecular biology techniques that provide novel approaches in gaining a comprehensive understanding of substrate metabolism in skeletal muscle of human subjects.
The current focus of his research is on metabolic abnormalities developed in skeletal muscle secondary to obesity. He is specifically interested in how muscle metabolic responses related to protein and fat metabolism are altered in obese humans, and how abnormal responses related to the metabolism of these substrates in muscle of people with obesity can be favorably altered by exercise and dietary interventions.
