Carol Martin has strong expertise related to gender identity and expression, gender development, gender segregation and integration, and peer influence and relationships. Martin has been interested in gender since the beginning of her career, when she formulated (with Charles Halverson) a theory of gender development (i.e., Gender Schema Theory) that has become one of the most highly cited and heavily researched theories of gender development. For many years after receiving her doctorate, she tested the ideas proposed in the theory. She has written (with Diane Ruble) chapters outlining the state of the science of gender development for the "Handbook of Child Psychology." She was an associate editor for Developmental Psychology and has served on editorial boards of several journals. In the past 15 years or so, her work has turned toward the study of gender in peer relationships and academics.
She has published more than 180 papers, with publications appearing in top-tier journals (Science, Psychological Bulletin, Annual Review of Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Child Development, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology). Her work has been funded by NICHD, Institute of Education Sciences, National Science Foundation, Department of Health and Human Services, and the T. Denny Sanford Foundation. Martin also has expertise in the translation of scientific findings related to peer relationships and classroom functioning to schools. Every two years, Martin co-organizes (with Campbell Leaper, UC-Santa Cruz) the Gender Development Research Conference in which scholars from all over the world present the latest gender-related research.
Ph.D. University of Georgia
Carol Martin's research interests include gender development and relationships in children, with particular focus on the development of gender identity and stereotypes, the development of gender attitudes and beliefs, gender and peer relationships, and the role of gender and sex segregation and integration in school adjustment and functioning. Interests also include assessment of peer networks. Teaching activities emphasize gender development, theories of child development, project-based learning, and human development.
Dr. Martin is the Director of Research for the Sanford Harmony Institute. The Institute goals are to conduct research and develop solutions to enhance and support children's relationships with parents, peers, teachers, communities, and nature. This Institute developed from the earlier work of Dr. Fabes, Dr. Hanish, and Dr. Martin, who were the Co-Directors of the Link Enterprise, which was designed to break down the social barriers that interfere with effective relationships and to build positive relationships within schools, families, and community organizations, with the goal of fostering success, safety, and inclusion for all. Members of the Link Enterprise conducted innovative research, trained the next generation of scholars, and engaged in community impact by developing and disseminating evidence-informed and evidence-based products and programs for use in schools and other institutions.

Dr. Martin is the Principal Investigator on a federally-funded research project from the Institute of Education Science (Department of Education) with Dr. Richard Fabes, Dr. Laura Hanish, and Dr. Dawn DeLay. The title is," The Relation of Gender-Integrated Classroom Climate to Students' Academic Outcomes." This goals of the research are to assess gender integration (GI) at both the classroom and student levels using multiple indicators and reporters and to consider variations by student gender, grade, and ethnicity; to determine the stability of GI over time, and to determine how variations in GI in the fall relate to elementary students’ academic outcomes in the spring,
A prior research project was a federally funded study of children's adjustment to school: The Understanding School Success (USS) project, of which she was the principal investigator. For more information on the USS project, contact Dr. Martin. Dr. Martin also has been awarded funding from the National Science Foundation to conduct research on children's peer groups and how to understand their underlying networks.
Dr. Martin is involved in several research groups including new ones being formed within the Sanford Harmony Institute. For several years, Dr. Martin ran the Children's Attitudes, Relationships, and Education (CARE) research group and some research is ongoing with data collected by this team. The team included graduate students who were interested in exploring questions on gender identity, stereotyping, gender expression, and attitudes in children, adolescents, and young adults. To answer questions about gender development, we have focused on analyzing data from a longitudinal study of children from 5 to 11 years of age, and from several other data sets with older children and young adults. Dr. Martin has also been a member of the Fostering Adolescent School Transitions (FAST) research team, run by Dr. Dawn DeLay, and the focus of this research team is to better understand how adolescents move through the middle school transition with focus on their identities, as well as their social, health, and academic outcomes.
