Dr. Sherine Gabriel is the Executive Vice President of ASU Health and University Professor of the Future of Health Outcomes and Medicine in the College of Health Solutions with a joint appointment in the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation.
Dr. Gabriel earned a Doctor of Medicine degree, with distinction, from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and completed Internal Medicine Residency and Rheumatology fellowship at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. She then earned a master's of science degree in clinical epidemiology from McMaster University in Canada. Dr. Gabriel is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and rheumatology. She is a professor of medicine and epidemiology. She also completed executive education programs at the Wharton and Kellogg schools of business.
Dr. Gabriel has had a career-long commitment to innovative education and career development for which she has received several honors including the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Educator Award, the Association for Clinical Research Training Distinguished Educator Award, and the McCann Scholar Award for Excellence in Mentoring in Medicine and Science, a highly prestigious award that included a $150,000 cash prize. She developed and launched the large and successful clinical research training and career development programs at Mayo Clinic and served as co-principal investigator and director of education for the National Institutes of Health-funded Center for Translational Science Activities.
Dr. Gabriel’s commitment to education innovation was evident throughout her deanships with Mayo Medical School and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and her university presidency at Rush University, when she, together with her teams and in collaboration with academic partners, designed and implemented new education models to better prepare future health scientists and healthcare providers to advance health equity and improve the science of health care delivery.
During her 26-year career at Mayo, Dr. Gabriel held many leadership positions including chair of the Department of Health Sciences Research, home to more than 420 professionals in three divisions: Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Biomedical Informatics, and Healthcare Policy and Research, member of the Executive Board (14 members overseeing operations of Mayo Clinic in Rochester and the Mayo Health System) and medical director of the Office for Global Strategic Alliances and Business Development, which is responsible for Mayo Clinic strategic business alliances, domestic and international.
Dr. Gabriel’s internationally recognized research program is largely NIH funded and has resulted in more than 250 peer-reviewed, original scientific publications addressing the risks, costs, determinants and outcomes of rheumatic diseases [H index >93, Scopus® 2022]. Dr. Gabriel has received numerous research awards in recognition of these contributions and has served on dozens of governmental committees and advisory boards, especially with the NIH and the FDA. She is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians (the society of U.S. leading physician-scientists) and a member of the prestigious National Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Gabriel was born in Cairo, Egypt, and immigrated to Canada at the age of 10 with her parents. She is married to Frank Cockerill, a retired infectious diseases physician; and they have two adult sons: Richard, a forensic psychiatrist, and Matthew, a lawyer and historian.
