Valentin Dinu holds a PhD in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics from Yale University and an A.B. in Mathematics and Physics from Harvard University. He also worked in industry as a quantitative financial modeler, software engineer and consultant.
He directs the Translational Bioinformatics Lab at ASU. Translational bioinformatics bridges multiple disciplines within biomedical informatics (bioinformatics, structural informatics, and clinical informatics) in seeking genomic and cellular mechanisms to explain and predict clinical phenomena. Professor Dinu teaches and co-teaches in-person and online undergraduate and graduate level classes in translational bioinformatics, research study design, medical decision science, biostatistics and data mining.
For the past 20 years Professor Dinu's research has focused on developing informatics methods and applications for managing, integrating and analyzing large biomedical data sets generated with various high-throughput platforms such as genomic sequencing, microarrays (genome wide association studies, gene expression, methylation, immunosignaturing, etc.) and mass-spectrometry. He has applied these methods and tools to analyze data for various diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, and age related macular degeneration. His research has been supported by NIH, BARDA, DOD, Children’s Oncology Group, Hyundai Hope On Wheels, Virginia G. Piper Foundation, Mayo Clinic and ASU.
- Ph.D. Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Yale University
- A.B. Mathematics and Physics, Harvard University
Valentin Dinu's research interests are the assessment, improvement, and development of computational approaches, software applications and databases that will facilitate the management, integration and analysis of diverse sources of biomedical information. Some of Valentin Dinu's teaching and research areas include 1) the use of biological domain knowledge to supplement statistical analysis and data mining methods to identify genes and pathways associated with disease, and 2) the exploration of database modeling approaches for managing large and heterogeneous data sets from both clinical and biosciences domains. Application domains include next generation sequencing (NGS), genome wide association studies (GWAS), and immunosignature protein arrays.
