Dr. Angela Giles obtained a Doctor of Behavioral Health degree from Arizona State University. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. For more than 20 years, Dr. Giles has worked in the fields of integrated behavioral health, inpatient and outpatient mental health, geriatrics, foster care, substance abuse and juvenile justice. She is currently a National Project Coordinator on special assignment at the National Social Work Program. In 2007, she helped launch the Primary Care Mental Health Integration program at the Hampton VA Medical Center. She also serves as an Integrated Behavioral Health trainee supervisor, facilitator for the PAIRS facilitation team, and the Rural Health Opioid Safety Education Facilitator.
Dr. Giles serves in many capacities in chronic disease management: provides Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and Chronic Pain, serves as faculty presenter for the Diabetes University, Diabetes Survival Skills, and Diabetes Education for Women, Patient and Family Diabetes Support Group Facilitator, Insulin Initiation Facilitator, Chronic Disease and Sexual Health Facilitator, Preventing Amputation Among Veterans Everywhere (PAVE) MH Committee member, Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) Metrics Diabetes Team, Diabetes Subcommittee Member, and the Diabetes Performance Improvement Team. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, she implemented telephonic & VA Video Connect COVID-19 Diabetes support groups for veterans, who reside in multiple states.
Dr. Giles has been involved in cutting edge VA National initiatives in the field of behavioral health such as, clinical video teleconferencing, opioid safety education in the rural health communities, and Primary Care Mental Health Integration On-Demand (PCMH-I). She served in a consultant capacity to implement the first phase of the Primary Care Mental Health Integration HUB expansion at a VA in VISN 6.

- Social Work Effectiveness for Rural Veterans Evaluation (SERVE) QUERI includes data evaluation of the program's effectiveness in improving Veteran health outcomes and interviews with front-line social workers. The product of the SERVE QUERI evaluation will be an in-depth appraisal of the Social Work PACT Staffing Program. This evaluation will influence VA national practice by improving implementation of the Social Work Practice Model; targeting high-risk Veterans through case finding with the Care Assessment Needs (CAN) score and evaluation using case management tools; and by providing evidence of the impact of social work case practice on Veterans’ care.
- Multi-Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) for the Enhancing Veteran Community Reintegration Research (ENCORE) Project. The Enhancing Veteran Community Reintegration Research (ENCORE) project is designed to create a VA research agenda to improve the impact of VA policies and programs that support Veteran community reintegration.
- VA/DOD Management of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) Clinical Practice Guideline Workgroup. The guideline describes the critical decision points in the management of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and provides clear and comprehensive evidence based recommendations incorporating current information and practices for practitioners throughout the DoD and VA Health Care systems. The guideline is intended to improve patient outcomes and local management of patients with MDD.
- VA/DOD Management of Diabetes Mellitus in Primary Care Clinical Practice Guideline Workgroup. The guideline is relevant to all healthcare professionals who have direct contact with patients with DM, and make decisions about their care. While the guideline is designed for primary care providers in an ambulatory care setting, the guideline can also be used to coordinate and standardize care within subspecialty teams and as a teaching tool for students and staff.
