Oswald Chong is an Associate Professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. His three research focuses include:
Focus 1: Engineering Sustainability:
- Energy, Water and Resource Efficiency in Systems, Design, Construction and Manufacturing Processes.
- System Optimization - Highly Efficiency System Installation/Construction/Operation, Predicting System Degredation, Maintenance and Replacement, Cost-Quality-Performance Interface, and Predictive Analytics.
- Environmental Impact Minimization - Water and Resource Cycling, Toxic Materials (generated by the manufacturing/construction proceses) Removal and Treatment, and Energy Footprints.
- Green Construction Materials - Highly Recyclable, Low-Environmental Impact, Affordable and High Performance Construction Materials (Low Carbon and Ease of Reuse and Recycling, and Much Better Performance), and Recycled Materials' Certification.
- These research would be performed using Life-Cycle Analysis, Carbon/Energy/Water Cycles, Datamining/Machine Learning, Structural Performance Analysis, Statistical Analysis, and Integrating Codes, Standards and Guidelines into the Design/Engineering Processes. Such research focuses on the entire lifecycle (design through disposal phases) performance of materials, processes and systems.
Focus 2: Information Integration and Interface between Design-Construction-Operation-Maintenance:
- Integrating Codes, Standards and Guidelines into Design, Construction, Operation, Maintenance, Deconstruction, Reuse/Recycling and Disposal of Buildings/Infrastructure. The purposes of the integration are to:
- Eliminates gaps and conflicts between design, construction, operations, maintnenace, deconstruction, reuse/recycling, and disposal of building/infrastructure.
- Develop Human-Machine Interface and Learning and Human-Knowledge Interface that integrate cost, schedule, quality, design, specifications, codes, standards, regulations and guidelines through artificial intelligence to provide comprehensive real-time information that would minimize gaps and conflicts throughout the building and infrastructure lifecycle (design to disposal/recycling).
- The focus of this research is to use machine learning to integrate information from a building lifecycle to eliminate gaps and conflicts.
Focus 3: Materials Supply Chain
- Develop Materials/Resource Flow Models to Optimize Supply Chain Management.
- To develop demand and supply flow models that would eliminate wastes, hold-up and disruption in construction material supply chain.
- To ensure new and reused/recycled materials are optimized and wastes from energy consumption and materials are elminated.
- The focus of this research is to use machine learning to optimize material supply chain at the international, regional and on construction site.
