Dr. Chong’s research aims to break down multi- and cross-disciplinary barriers in knowledge sharing and design, enabling a global society where artificial intelligence supports autonomous engineering systems that integrate insights from all fields. This work seeks to unify design, engineering, and decision-making across domains to produce more complete, accurate, and optimized solutions—empowering practitioners, institutions, and citizens worldwide to make better, more informed choices. Ultimately, it envisions a future where humans can live on or beyond Earth but remaining connected through integrated knowledge systems and intelligent infrastructure to make decisions that would benefit the growth of social and humanity intelligence and capability.

My research focuses on lunar design and construction, sustainability, system optimization, production systems, materials, artificial intelligence, anomalies detection, generative AI, integrating natural language, images and engineering design, building codes, standards, and best practices, regulations and project control. I also conduct research in engineering communications in project, management and systems. My new research focuses on applying mathematical/AI concepts and models to transform and reinvent production systems, material design, life cycle analysis, system designs, project control, supply chain, and operation methods. Potential PhD students should understand these concepts and theories, and be prepared to do coding.

Life Cycle Analysis and CFRP/CLT Structural Components, Energy Design and Efficiency of HVAC Systems, System Optimization for Semiconductor Fab's Mechanical Systems, Materials Life Cycle Analysis and Circularity, AI applications in closing the design-construction-operation-maintenance gap (Next Step Architecture-Engineering Integration/Interface), Integration of Technical, Arts, Social Science and Human knowledge and interface (Human-AI Knowledge Sharing), and Semiconductor Fab Design and Construction Codes.

Space/Lunar Research will focus on modularization of habitate in space, Moon and Mar - Living and Work Spaces, Oxygen-Carbon Dioxide Recycling System, Water-regeneration System, Energy systems, Thermal Insulations, and Resource Circularity Systems.
