Sreetharan Kanthaswamy is a professor in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Arizona State University's West campus. He is also a Research Geneticist at the California National Primate Research Center, University of California, Davis. His research on primate genetics and genomics is centered on the investigation of anthropogenic and natural forces that shape and structure genetic variation of natural and captive animal populations.
His forensic science research is based on the analyses of traces of blood, saliva, and hair collected at crime scenes or from civil cases for DNA-typing. To further forensic science and provide educational opportunities for students, his research aims to establish species-specific STRs, SNPs, and mtDNA markers for accurate and precise genetic identification and to enhance population genetics databases for each species. Dr Kanthaswamy provides expert witness testimony on human and animal (veterinary) forensic DNA analysis and casework review.
Professor Kanthaswamy obtained his bachelor's degree (with honors) and master's degree in genetics at the University of Malaya, Malaysia. He then completed his doctorate at the University of California, Davis, and did his postdoctoral research at the University of Iowa-Carver College of Medicine. Before joining ASU in 2015, he was a professor at the Environmental Toxicology Department, University of California-Davis, and a visiting professor at the California State University, Sacramento Environmental Studies Department.

My expertise is in population, forensic and conservation genetics. My research on primate genetics and genomics is centered on the investigation of anthropogenic and natural forces which shape and structure genetic variation of natural and captive animal populations. My forensic science research is based on the analyses of traces of human and animal blood, saliva and hair collected at crime scenes or from civil cases for DNA-typing. To further animal forensic science and provide educational opportunities for students, my research aims to establish species-specific genetic markers for accurate and precise identification and to enhance our population genetics database for each species. I also provide expert witness testimony on animal/veterinary forensic DNA analysis and casework review. My focus on the cellular/molecular aspects of conservation biology, biodiversity protection and environmental sustainability is fueled by my experience in wetland protection and genetic management. I constantly integrate policy issues into my research and community services and incorporate new research findings from my laboratory into my teaching.
