Jill Sullivan

Jill M. Sullivan is an associate professor of instrumental music education in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. She teaches undergraduate instrumental methods, masters-level courses in instrumental literature and introduction to research, and doctoral research classes in quantitative and historical methods. Prior to working at ASU, she held positions at the University of Oklahoma, Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, and Sequoyah Middle School in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Professor Sullivan has experience teaching band to elementary, middle level, and high school students. At Sequoyah Middle School, she started 200 beginning band students each year and the entire program included more than 400 band students. In addition, Sullivan started a New Horizons Band for senior adults at the University of Oklahoma.

Her research agenda includes historical publications pertaining to 19th and 20th Century women's bands and quantitative preservice and inservice music teacher investigations. Sullivan has published in several refereed music journals: American Music,  Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, Journal of Band Research, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education , Journal of Music Therapy, Journal of Research in Music Education, Music Educators Journal, Research and Issues in Music Education, and Teaching Music. In September 2011, she completed her book "Bands of Sisters: U.S. Women's Military Bands during World War II" as part of The Scarecrow Press series on American Wind Bands. Also, Sullivan recently completed eight biographical entries for the second edition of  The Grove Dictionary of American Music. Sullivan serves on three journal editorial boards: "Music Educators Journal (MEJ),  Research & Issues in Music Education" (RIME), and "UPDATE: Applications of Research in Music Education."  She has presented her research and teacher-pedagogy workshops throughout the United States and internationally in Australia, Austria, Italy, and Sweden. In the fall of 2011, she hosted the 20th anniversary of the Feminist Theory & Music (FT&M) Conference in the ASU School of Music.

Professor Sullivan has served as the chair for several national and state music education organizations: national chair of the Collegiate Music Educators of the National Association for Music Education (CMENC), the chair of Arizona CMENC, national chair of the Gender Special Research Interest Group (SRIG) of The National Association for Music Education, and the chair of Arizona College Music Educators (ACME). At ASU, she continues to serve as the ASU CMENC chapter advisor, as a faculty affiliate to the Women & Gender Studies department, and was a member of the faculty senate. 

Sullivan holds the following degrees in music: doctorate in music education from the University of Iowa, teaching certification from the University of Iowa, a masters degree in clarinet performance from the University of Michigan, and a bachelor's degree--earning university and departmental honors scholar distinctions--majoring in both music history and clarinet performance from Illinois State University.
