Teaching university students is his highest working priority, but research interests include projects done in his doctoral dissertation and master's thesis where he studied technology and culture. Specifically, the development of virtual reality and the evolution of television weather presentation technology are areas he has published research in but he has also conducted and presented other technology related research at national and international communication association conferences including: ICA, NCA, BEA, and WSCA. Steven has also collaborated with ASU colleagues to present and publish the proceedings paper “Mediating Digital Interfaces to Negotiate Tensions between Science Communication Spheres” for the 39th annual ACM International Conference in Design of Communication.
He recently presented his current research, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Public Speaking, as an invited speaker at the 2026 AI Applications and Impacts panel discussion - a public event hosted by the Applied Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies faculty in the School of Applied Sciences and Arts in CISA at the Polytechnic campus, Arizona State University.
He started teaching communication to adults in 1993 and has instructed over 200 separate class sections - thousands of students - in a variety of courses ranging from public speaking and media to business/leadership communication, small group, family communication, and advanced research. Teaching face-to-face classes is his preferred method of instruction but he also teaches online and hybrid courses. He has worked primarily as an instructor of communication at colleges and universities in Arizona and California, but has also lived in Florida (chasing hurricanes), Las Vegas (chasing wild news/weather stories) and in Phoenix (chasing the Monsoon). He is enjoying his 34th year of marriage with 5 adult children and 6 grandchildren.
Dr. Garry has been teaching communication at Arizona State University since 2001 and has been full-time at the ASU Polytecnic campus since 2010. He looks forward to getting to know each student and help them thrive by reaching their full potential in life.
