Weidi Zhang (Ph.D.) is a new media artist/designer based in Los Angeles and Phoenix. She is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of immersive experience design at the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) center of Arizona State University. Her interdisciplinary art and design research investigates A Speculative Assemblage at the intersection of immersive media design, experimental data visualization, and interactive AI art.
Her works have been recognized with prestigious design and media art awards, including the Best In Show Award in SIGGRAPH Art Gallery (in 2021 and 2022), the Red Dot Award (in 2022), A' Design Award (in 2024), and Honorary Mention in Prix Ars Electronica (in 2022). She has also been a Juried Selection in Japan Media Arts Festival (in 2020), and her works were shortlisted for the Lumen Prize (in 2020 and 2021) and among others.
Her new media artworks have been exhibited at leading international conferences, new media arts festivals, museums, and galleries, including the International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA), Times Art Museum (CN), SwissNex Gallery (US), SIGGRAPH Art Gallery, CVPR, IEEE VISAP, V2_Lab for unstable media, and others. Additionally, her immersive audio/visual works have been performed in numerous planetariums/domes worldwide, including the Berlin Zeiss Planetarium (GE), Satosphere at Societe des Arts Technologique (CA), City Light Art Museum (CN), Forum Des Images (FR), Planetarium 1 (RUS), among others. She served as jury member and reviewer for leading computer graphics and visualization conferences and journals, such as Siggraph Art Gallery, IEEE VIS Art Program, Info+, Leonardo Journal and among others.
She worked as a visual designer in award-winning visual design studios in LA and was selected for Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) educational initiative for entertainment design in 2015. She has also worked as a visual artist and motion graphic designer for music videos, concerts, and theme parks.
Zhang holds a Ph.D. degree in Media Arts and Technology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, an MFA degree in Art + Technology from the California Institute of the Arts, and a BFA degree in Photo/Media from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining ASU, she was a lecturer at both UC Santa Barbara and The Ohio State University.
