As a family therapist, I am interested in how people accomplish changes in their immediate social contexts. My research focuses on developing and testing family-based interventions to promote positive youth development, especially in ethnically diverse low-income families. I have co-led projects funded by the US National Institute for Mental Health and US National Institute for Drug Abuse to develop and test the Bridges to High School program. The Bridges program targets young teens making the transition to middle school and their parents to promote school engagement and reduce mental health problems. I also originated the Community Action Research Experiences (CARE) program, a year long experience in which undergraduate and graduate students apply action research skills to lead community improvement. CARE students collaborate with local not-for-profit agencies to implement research projects that increase its effectiveness of these organizations.

I also study how action research can be applied to improve community human service agencies.
