Ben A. Minteer is professor of environmental history, philosophy, and conservation in the Center for Biology and Society and the School of Life Sciences at ASU. He writes about the history and ethics of nature conservation, with special attention to wilderness and the American West. His current work tracks how the Western, in print and on screen, shaped postwar American understandings of the meaning and value of wild country, from frontier to refuge.
Minteer is author or editor of more than a dozen books for both scholarly and general audiences, including The Heart of the Wild: Essays on Nature, Conservation, and the Human Future, co-edited with Jonathan Losos (Princeton University Press, 2024), and Wild Visions: Wilderness as Image and Idea, coauthored with Mark Klett and Steve Pyne (Yale University Press, 2022). His next book is Saving the Wild Country: Five Visionary Environmentalists and the Struggle for Nature in the American West (Yale University Press, 2027). He is an Active Member of the Western Writers of America.
