Long Bio
Mark Simpson is a political scientist and political historian, whose work examines challenges to American geopolitical dominance from foreign entities, as well as threats posed by terrorist organizations. Simpson also specializes in the history of the presidency and presidential elections. He teaches courses in political science, human geography, and American history. He is an advocate for interdisciplinary education and encourages students to explore issues from different angles, across multiple subject areas. Simpson has teaching experience at all levels of higher education, having taught at community colleges, a private four-year college, and two universities. During his career he has accepted appointments as an assistant professor, a full professor, and department chair. Simpson is the author of three books and has contributed multiple columns for news organizations.
Simpson utilizes his expertise in a number of roles outside of academia. He has advised both of the major political parties on campaign platforms and campaign strategy for midterm and presidential elections. Simpson holds multiple advisory positions within the national Republican Party; most notably for the Republican Senatorial Committee.
He also participates in both the larger national security and international relations communities. Simpson is an active member of the U.S. Naval Institute and serves on the Middle East & North Africa Regional Committee, with the Overseas Security Advisory Council for the U.S. Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service.
In early 2024 Simpson accepted an invite to join the advisory council for Harvard Business Review.
In the summer of 2024 Simpson also accepted a prestigious appointment as a higher education ambassador with the Council on Foreign Relations.
Simpson is currently an instructor in political science with the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University.
