Frank Serafini is a professor of literacy education and children's literature in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. He is an award-winning children's picturebook author and illustrator and received the Mayhill Arbuthnot Award from the International Literacy Association as the 2014 Distinguished Professor of Children's Literature. In addition. Frank was recognized by the International Visual Literacy Association with the Distinguished Educator Award in 2021.
Professor Serafini has published seven books with Heinemann, including: The Reading Workshop, Reading Aloud and Beyond, Lessons in Comprehension, Around the Reading Workshop in 180 Days, Classroom Reading Assessments, and Reading Workshop 2.0: Teaching Reading in the Digital Age. Frank's recent textbooks, Reading the Visual: An Introduction to Teaching Multimodal Literacies, Re-Imagining Multiliteracies and Beyond the Visual: An Introduction to Researching Visual and Multimodal Phenomena were published with Teachers College Press.
He has been conducting research on visual and multimodal literacy working with contemporary picturebooks, wine labels, and other visual and multimodal phenomena. He is also developing a critical, visual literacy curriculum and has been investigating digital and mobile applications in literacy education.

Guiding Research Questions:
- What is the role of picturebooks in the elementary reading curriculum?
- How do young readers make sense of the visual and design elements of picturebooks?
- What strategies do young readers need to make sense of visual images and multimodal texts?
Current Research Projects:
- Dr. Serafini has been conducting research on visual and multimodal literacy, in particular working with contemporary picturebooks to support young readers comprehension. He is developing a visual literacy curriculum and has been investigating digital and mobile applications in literacy education.
