Bronwynne C. Evans (PhD, RN, FNGNA, ANEF, FAAN) is professor and senior director of the Ph.D. in Nursing and Healthcare Innovation in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University. Outcomes of Professor Evans’ research with culturally and ethnically diverse students include identification of multiple, specific educational barriers to success; a pioneering compendium of recruitment and retention “best practices”; and a series of state, presentations and widely-cited scholarly publications in an area where little empirical evidence is available. Her highly acclaimed 2003 film, used by more than 100 colleges and agencies for recruitment and retention of diverse students and for teaching cultural competency, received the American Academy of Nursing Media Award. This work has been instrumental in increasing numbers of Hispanic/Latino and American Indian baccalaureate nurses, resulting in improvements to culturally congruent care.
Her co-founding leadership with the National Organization of Nurses with Disabilities has increased national acceptance of students with disabilities into nursing programs. Critical steps in attaining this outcome included national webinars on recruitment and retention of such students and a documentary film about the first nursing student using a wheelchair to graduate from a baccalaureate nursing program.
Professor Evans is the first nurse to explore nutrition status in Mexican-American nursing home residents and generate an empirical measure of their food satisfaction. Her multi-site, longitudinal, mixed-methods exploration of the caregiving trajectory in these families currently constructs interventions to support and improve caregiving in Hispanic families, both in nursing homes and in the community, reduce health disparities, and shape a healthier eldercare environment.
